It is with a feeling of regretful duty that we inform you that The Daily Flake will not be in operation during the 2011-2012 northern hemisphere winter in Japan.

Since its conception in 2009, The Daily Flake has provided its audience with a window into Japan’s unique winter, combining stunning video imagery with honest, informative reporting, keeping viewers up to date with snow conditions at ski resorts across the country.

Despite its considerable success, The Daily Flake was unable to secure a major sponsor this year and therefore lacked financial backing to cover the growing costs of operating. The decision not to go ahead was not made easily but, while we loved providing the reports, The Daily Flake can not run on love alone.

The Daily Flake is lucky to have received significant support from its previous sponsors: Rhythm Snowsports, The North Face, Snowinsurance.com.au and Deep Powder Tours. We certainly appreciate their belief in our company and are grateful for the contributions they made to The Daily Flake. A round of high fives and hugs also go out to our viewers, without whom The Daily Flake would have simply disappeared into the ether of unwatched YouTube clips.

It has already started snowing in Niseko and no doubt the resort is in for yet another mind-blowing season. While The Daily Flake is unable to operate, there are plenty of businesses in the resorts that are and we hope our viewers and associates will support them just like we wish we could.

It’s going to be a long hawl for Japan to recover from the  March 11 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear reactor incident in Fukushima. They still need all the help they can get, and we should all continue to support Japan as much as we can.

There are many fundraising campaigns to support, however here are two initiatives which the Niseko Promotion Board have put forward.

• Second Harvest Japan has been delivering food to affected communities. Since shortly after the earthquake, they have been bringing supplies directly to people who need them.
• The Japanese Red Cross distributes money to the governments or groups that manage areas that have been affected by the earthquake.

The Niseko promotion board has released a document to explain to travel agents and potential visitors that Niseko has been unaffected by the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear reactor incident in Fukushima.
